How to Set Up FreeCell: A Step-by-Step Guide
FreeCell is a unique member of the solitaire family. Unlike Klondike or Spider, FreeCell is a game of open information—meaning every single card is dealt face-up from the very start. This makes the game more of a logic puzzle than a game of luck.
If you have a standard 52-card deck and a flat surface, follow these steps to create the perfect FreeCell layout.
FreeCell Rules at a Glance
Now that your cards are on the table, here are the three golden rules for moving them:
- The Tableau: You can move a card onto another card if it is one rank lower and of the opposite color (e.g., a Red 6 can go on a Black 7).
- The Free Cells: You can move any single card into an empty "Free Cell" at any time to reach cards blocked underneath it.
- The Foundations: Your goal is to move all cards here, starting with the Aces, sorted by suit.
Is Every FreeCell Game Winnable?
One of the reasons FreeCell is so popular is that nearly every deal is solvable. Unlike classic Solitaire where the stock pile might hide the cards you need, FreeCell gives you all the tools up front. If you get stuck, it’s usually a matter of strategy, not bad luck!
